The storks of Alsace

An iconic symbol of Alsace, the white stork captivates with its grace and its attachment to the region, to which it returns every year after a long journey.

The Alsace stork is an iconic symbol of our beautiful region.

It holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. These migratory birds, recognisable by their black-and-white plumage and long neck, are particularly present in the Alsatian landscape, where they find an ideal habitat for nesting and breeding.

Alsace is one of the regions in Europe with the largest number of white storks. Every year, after a long journey from Africa, they return to settle on the rooftops of Alsatian houses, particularly in villages such as Hunawihr, Riquewihr, or Obernai, where they have taken up residence on the roof of the « La Halle aux Blés » restaurant. Their nest is visible from the market square, right in the town centre.

These birds have adopted human dwellings as nesting sites, a practice dating back several centuries.

Besides their ecological role as predators of insects and small animals, storks are also carriers of local traditions. In Alsatian culture, they are associated with birth and symbolise luck and prosperity. Their presence is a source of pride for Alsatians and attracts many tourists each year.

You may also spot them along the Wine Route during your drive or bike ride.
