The most beautiful villages of Alsace

It stretches almost 170 km, between the foothills of the Vosges and the Alsace plain. It crosses rolling landscapes dotted with medieval villages, family-run cellars and renowned estates, offering an authentic and welcoming experience.

You'll pass through picturesque villages, renowned vineyards and prestigious wine estates.

Along the way, you'll even have the chance to stay at Hôtel Gustave in Colmar.

During your journey, you'll discover Alsace and its authentic villages, famous for their half-timbered houses, vineyards and preserved heritage, where every street tells a story.

Here are, in our view, the must-see stops on the Wine Route:

Obernai is a small town at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile. It's one of the major stops on the Wine Route. An elegant town with its belfry and lively market square, it's also the ideal starting point for visiting the Mont Sainte-Odile sanctuary, a spiritual landmark of Alsace, located at an altitude of 753m.

At the heart of Alsace's wine country, Colmar offers privileged access to the region's most iconic villages. These villages are home to some of the greatest Alsatian estates, set against postcard-perfect backdrops. But Colmar itself is a city well worth seeing. The birthplace of Auguste Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty, Colmar is an incredible city of art, history and heritage, inviting you to stroll and romance amid its canals and the district nicknamed « Little Venice ».

During your trip, we recommend stopping in a few villages:

  • Bergheim: a village encircled by ramparts, ranked among the most beautiful villages in France and voted « France's favourite village » in 2022.
  • Ribeauvillé: nestled at the foot of the Vosges mountains, combining nature, heritage and gastronomy. It's the ideal starting point for the « Three Castles Hike ».
  • Riquewihr: a fortified town surrounded by ramparts, famous for its main street lined with medieval houses.
  • Kaysersberg: a medieval village crossed by a river and overlooked by a castle. Appreciated for its heritage and its warm, authentic atmosphere.
  • Turckheim: combines heritage, Alsatian traditions and nature discovery.
  • Eguisheim: an iconic village ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. Its circular historic centre, flower-lined lanes and colourful façades charm visitors. It too was voted « France's favourite village » in 2013.

Each stop will also be an opportunity to visit a renowned wine estate.

These family estates, with their historic houses, open their doors to visitors to share Alsatian winemaking know-how and traditions. You'll of course also be able to take part in one (or several!) tastings. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Muscat are all waiting for you.

Whether you prefer dry, crisp or floral wines, you're sure to find something you love.
